An escalator moves 3600 to 6000 persons per hour depending on step width — a lift cannot come close, which is why retail and transport buildings use escalators for the main vertical journey and keep lifts for accessibility and goods. Standard units run at 0.5 m/s on a 35 degree incline over a 3000-6000 mm rise.
